Use Gas Safely
Because gas appliances use a flame, it’s important to keep papers, toys, and paint thinners (and other flammable liquids) away from them to prevent fires. Also, remind the cooks in your family to set the flame just high enough to cover the bottom of the pot. Flames that are too high can be a fire hazard and waste energy.
If the burners on top of your range have a blue flame, they are working correctly. But if the flame looks like a candle flame, is yellow, lazy or leaves soot on the bottom of your pots and pans, your range MUST be serviced by a qualified technician.
Make sure younger sisters or brothers don’t play with or around oven knobs, other gas appliances, or pipes—they could accidentally turn the gas on.
Toys and papers left near gas appliances are a hazard because they could be ignited by the appliance’s pilot light. Make sure adults don’t store gasoline, paint thinner, or aerosol cans near them either, as their vapors could ignite a fire as well.
